HIMURA KENSHIN, The main character... a wanderer trying to make up for a bloody past by protecting people with a Sakabatou (reverse-bladed sword)he wishes to make-up for the many lives he has taken

KAMIYA KAORU, A budo instructor who has taken on her father's dojo - she teaches sword techniques for defensive purpose and protection rather than a form for killing... she loves Kenshin, but neither will admit it openly

SAGARA SANOSUKE, once a member of a proud militia group - he turned to the mafia after the govt. used and framed them for their dirty deads - He wanted revenge for his leader, but joins Kenshin after realizing the harmful and illegal things he has done for his revenge

SHINOMORI AOSHI, a member of a group of ninja called the Oniwabanshu - he becomes obsessed with the idea of his technique to be strongest, having felt he lost that title to Kenshin back at the end of the EDO Dynasty; he seeks to prove it by defeating him... he turns his back on himself and his fellow ninja for this goal

MISAO, part of the ONIWABANSHU, of which Aoshi was leader, she loves Aoshi - though they are seperated by several years and opposing views. She believes there is still hope to save him and longs for the day to see him smile

MYOUJIN YAHIKO, his family passed away and he was forced to work for a local Yakuza - or gang as a pick pocket. He is samurai - being that his family bloodline was (it is a rule that samurai are "born", not made). Anyhow, he is helped out of his situation by Kaoru and Kenshin - he then becomes part of the family, and studies the Kamiya-Katsushin-Ryu technique of Kaoru's dojo

TAKANI MEGUMI, It is speculated that she cares for Sanoske, but she tends to hang on Kenshin - of course, this upsets Kaoru... she is the daughter of a famous physician - her family died, leaving her in the clutches of a local mafia leader wishing to cash in on her madicinal ability - she was able to create a cheap - high quality opium - not wishing to - she nearly took her own life, but Kenshin and the others helped her gain a new life with them and a career as an assistant physician; able to fulfill her dream of helping others

SAITOH HAJIME, He and Kenshin go way back, they were formerly on opposing sides in the battle to Westernize the Japanese govt. They never finished their fight... He became an officer of the law and is forced to join with Kenshin to help the govt. at it's time of need against an opposing force which threatens the peace of all Japan
